Voor de werken ‘Maria glows in the dark’ heb ik prints gemaakt van ansichtkaarten van schilderijen en beelden van een eeuwen geleden. Bijvoorbeeld Maria glows in the dark (1) is een afbeelding van het schilderij ‘Maria met kind’ uit 1534 door A. Isenbrandt.
Op dit werk lijkt Maria heilig en afstandelijk, een icoon.
Door “Maria met kind” op deze manier, met hedendaagse materialen zoals badstof, kunstbont of ‘glow in the dark’-borduurgaren te bewerken, wil ik Maria iets eigentijds en alledaags laten uitbeelden. Waardoor ze minder onbereikbaar en heilig wordt.
Een vrouw net als ‘wij’.
Maria is in mijn ogen een soort oermoeder. Totaal dienstbaar en zichzelf opofferend voor haar kind. De Maria’s die ik gemaakt heb zijn dan ook, onder andere door het materiaalgebruik, heel sterk verbonden met hun kind.
Is dit zoals een moeder zou moeten zijn?
For “Mary glows in the dark” I made prints from postcards of paintings and sculptures of centuries ago. For example, Mary glows in the dark (1) is an image of the painting “Virgin and Child” from 1534 by A. Isenbrandt. In this work Maria seems sacred and standoffish, an icon.
By making “Virgin and Child” in this way, with contemporary materials such as terry cloth, artificial fur or ‘glow in the dark’ embroidery thread, I want to let Maria portray something contemporary and ordinary. Making her less unreachable and holy.
A woman just as “we” are.
Mary is a kind of primeval mother in my eyes. Sacrificially and subservient to her child.
The Mary’s I’ve made are, by the use of materials, closely connected to their child.
Should a mother be like this?
